
Operations and Management in a hospital encompasses multiple parallel activities to allow smooth functioning.
This topic would focus on processes which are involved on a day to day basis such that it yields the best service outcome.
Eg., OPD Management, IPD Management , Appointments and Scheduling , Supporting services like FnB, housekeeping, waste management, maintenance, IT, Billing, gen admin etc, Clinical department operations would also be considered, however clinical/ technical areas is preferred to be avoided until there is a significant impact to daily operations. , There could be multiple points of minor delays that mountain up to cause a bigger delay. However there are always mitigation prospects that need to be understood and effective action must be taken proactively to avoid such delays.
The project is to enable the student to get an overall understanding of Hospital operations and management
The student must be able to provide a detailed project report involving the various aspects as defined in the charter
The student must also display some analytical skills for better understanding
Output expected out of Students at the end of Project : analysis of any burning issue in the hospital.
Process improvements, strategy development etc
Understanding of hospital process – general operations, process flows, patient centricity, time management, clinical protocols, employee engagement, internal audits, learning and development etc
Knowhow of industry standards for turn around times for services, quality standards, improvement programs, allied services, support services etc
Basic Statistics knowledge The purpose of this study is to study the operations and management process that are involved in routine handling of services in a hospital.
The main agenda behind any operations and management professional must be cost control as any unnecessary process adds cost which in turn adds to service cost. It also is deeply rooted in patient safety, policies and procedures to prevent errors and accidents.
Identify impeding systematic delays in any process, quantify the extent of the delays, and recommend performance improvement initiatives to expedite turnaround times.
The network of process that ends up in providing the best possible care/ services for patients is considered to be operations management.
This project is to be conducted at a hospital set up in order to understand the intricacies and aspect of process involved in service delivery The most common challenges faced by hospitals are finances, productivity, safety of patients, regulatory, security, use of technology, patient satisfaction, integration of system/process etc The usual practices for process enhancement used by hospitals on a daily basis Is analysis of gaps, comparative, step by step planning for improvement, action items, outcome monitoring.
